Internet Pioneers on “What Not to Do” which we think that can be applied to making your existing online outfit smarter.
Some of the highlights:
Don’t do what users don’t ask you to do. If you want to control your own future, don’t accept outside money, like from VCs. Don’t do marketing or advertising. As a startup company, those are some of the costliest things you can do. Those can chew up an enormous amount of money.
(** Unless you are doing some very extraordinary or VIRAL by nature, We suggest you better do some marketing and advertising. After all, there’s only one craiglist.com in this world. Here’s a good list to start submitting your website to. **)
[update 13/1/2008]: King of e-commerce – Amazon just invested USD 4 million in woot.com, that tells you how good they are.
Did you get me wrong? No!
Recently just bump into a very cool online store – www.woot.com
It really really sells only one item per day; until it’s sold out. Merchandizes typically takes 2 to 3 business days to ship out. Once the items are sold out, they will no longer be available.
Surprise! Think there will never be a price hike? Don’t worry, it won’t affect most of us, at least not yet.
What’s Verisign’s “verdict” to increase the price?
1) Increasingly heavy usage on the domain name server query system – a whopping 30 billion query per day at time of writing.
2) Higher maintenance cost for security to defend cyber attacks

Look at the bright side, they seem to have a pretty solid reason to increase the price. And mostly your web hosting companies which resell the domain won’t increase their price, since domain is only an entry level products to up-sell more lucrative services like email and web hosting. Now do you understand why we mention it won’t affect most of us, at least not yet?

Mix Malaysia? Got ya! sorry it ain’t no april fool. Stop dreaming for grand web2.0 mashup event like Mix to be happening anytime soon in Malaysia and brushing shoulders with Ray Ozzie. (on 2nd thought, why not? Bill gates was here before, James Gosling aka the Java Father also just here recently)
How about one with our local talent Walter Wong (Microsoft Evangelist)! You can grill him with questions on web hacking stuff. Don’t miss this one if you want to learn more on AJAX and web2.0 stuff!
Synopsis:
A plain old HTML experience is no longer good enough for your most frequent (and most valuable) users – AJAX is setting new standards for responsiveness and usability, visitors are expecting increasingly sophisticated customization and personalization options, and rich media integration is unlocking new revenue streams. But building these richer sites can be difficult and expensive. This keynote session will explore how technologies like Internet Explorer 7, “Atlas” (Microsoft’s new AJAX framework), Windows Live!, the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPE) and InfoCard can take your browser-based content and commerce experiences to another level and increase earnings, while minimizing development and maintenance costs.
