Online Store that Sells ONLY 1 Item?
[update 13/1/2008]: King of e-commerce – Amazon just invested USD 4 million in woot.com, that tells you how good they are.
Did you get me wrong? No!
Recently just bump into a very cool online store – www.woot.com
It really really sells only one item per day; until it’s sold out. Merchandizes typically takes 2 to 3 business days to ship out. Once the items are sold out, they will no longer be available.
Sounds crazy right? Which online merchants are not trying hard to sell as much stuffs as possible? Amazon has more than 3 million books title available in their database. Woot.com is really working against the conventional way (Think different) of offering a wide selection of goods so that you can serve virtually every customer’s needs. But pondering through, there’s no way one could be everything to everybody. We think it’s a genius marketing move.
See our verdict below.
A Quick Browsing Revealing a Few Interesting Stuffs:
1) Every single item they sell, they have a blog post about it – Very smart SEO strategy. Google just like blogs. (advertisement: Neowave offer FREE Blog (WordPress) installation for those who buy our SEO shopping cart software)
2) Fanatic Fans – Not-a-clue on how they build such a following crowd. But their story is very unique and entertaining. When people buy from you, most likely your story is clicking with them (marketing expert will tell you this is actually call positioning). They are doing it damn right. Just check out the discussion on each product and you will understand what I mean. Amazon probably doesn’t get that much of review per item.
3) Humor pays – Very good and funny content write-up. It makes your feel warm and personal just like the boss from the store-next-door. Profitable by 2043? Oh come on… Malaysia targets to be a developed country by 2020. It cannot take you guys any longer than that to be profitable.
Smart… but can you just copy their model? Well, picking a sellable product (yes, only one allowed per day) is not exactly as simple as it seems. Woot.com knows very well what sells for their niche. You can’t just copy that. You gotta be a real merchant at heart who understand deeply about what the customer really wants.
